Traditional textiles are one of the forms of expression of the identity of the peoples of the world through which representations and imaginaries have historically manifested themselves, which transmit particular ways of understanding the world. These manifestations of identity, art and heritage, have proven their permanence over time, in some cases for millennia, not exempt from important innovations in relation to their technology, use, manufacture and meaning throughout their history. .
In contemporary times, ancestral knowledge is exposed to more vertiginous transformations, competing asymmetrically in a globalized production market, where the tourist phenomenon and socioeconomic circumstances have a direct impact on textile traditions and therefore, on material and cultural culture. intangible that represents the identity of its creators and bearers.
Such a complex and long-lived dynamic presents important challenges for manufacturers, carriers and researchers, which is why the Meeting: Textiles of the Americas offers a space for dialogue, discussion and the exchange of information at the continental level.
Build spaces for dialogue between those involved in the creation and multidisciplinary study of the traditional textile heritage of the American Continent. This is intended to promote rapprochement, reflection and conservation to strengthen the knowledge of the various textile expressions.
