In 1994 the Pro-Teje Committee was founded; its name means “For the Weavers”. It aims to advance top quality artisan textile production oriented to the preservation and revitalization of Maya weaving through the rescue of ancestral procedures and techniques.
In this way Pro-Teje contributes to the appraisal and appreciation of one of the world’s most important cultures, while concurrently obtaining social-economic support for the Maya weavers of Guatemala. The committee works directly with weavers from the Guatemalan highlands, providing them with diverse colored materials as well as continued supervision and advice to control the quality of the weavings.
